On May 13, 1985, Philadelphia police dropped a C4 explosive on the home of the MOVE family at 62nd and Osage Avenue, after 500 police fired over 10,000 rounds into the home. City officials allowed the fire to burn, killing 11 people including five children, and destroying 61 homes.
On May 13, 2015, hundreds of people gathered at the site of the bombing and spoke about the injustice carried out that day and against the 7 surviving MOVE members languishing in prison stemming from a standoff in West Philly in 1978. This speech was delivered by Dr. Cornel West proceeding the march through the city.
Mike Africa Jr. was born in prison in 1978. He's spent 40 years fighting for the release of his parents, Debbie and Mike Sr, who are members of the MOVE organization and were unjustly incarcerated along with 7 others in 1978 following a televised siege at their home in West Philadelphia.
In late 2018, both Debbie and Mike Sr. were released on parole. This is their story, told for the first time ever in public last week at Rowan University. I was on hand to document the entire 2 hour talk.
